I have loved to write since the third grade. I love words, and I like the impact they can have on a person’s life or a situation. In the beginning, I wrote short stories. Around sixth grade, I started writing poetry to help me deal with low self-esteem. My poems were my way of escape. I could express myself freely without worrying about what others thought of me. I knew there were other girls who felt like me and needed to be encouraged. I wanted my poems to reflect my ideas and emotions but, more importantly, who I am as person. I believe that words have power, and when you use them in the right way, they can inspire and encourage a generation of people.
A couple of years ago, I attended a GIRL writing workshop and wrote a poem entitled “I Can Just Be Me” that was featured in a book published by GIRL. GIRL even had a book signing to promote the book and the girls who wrote either poems or short stories. Later on, GIRL set-up another workshop for those interested in having their writings published. I took the opportunity, and with the help of Ms. Blunt and my mother, I wrote and published my first book of poetry! My dream to write a book had become a reality, and I was thrilled!
Having the opportunity to create and publish my first book of poetry has been an amazing journey that I hope to continue. I love writing, and I want the people around me to acquire that same love. Nevertheless, writing does not have to be in the form of poetry. Writing is anything that you make it to be. Remember, “You can create through your words. Just be you and let your voice be heard. You don’t have to be strong and powerful in might. Just be yourself and write, write, WRITE!”
